Indigo De Souza graced the Jersey Shore’s bowling alley/concert venue Asbury Lanes on September 23rd. The singer-songwriter from Asheville, North Carolina has created three iconic albums- I Love My Mom, Any Shape You Take, and All of This Will End. Most recently, they released the EP WHOLESOME EVIL FANTASY made up of three tracks of a completely new sound. This EP shows Indigo experimenting with hyperpop production, which she wrote came from the “dumbest, goofiest, most brazen place in my spirit.”
Opening the show was alternative pop duo ill peach. They released their debut album THIS IS NOT AN EXIT just last year, of which they wrote “This album is what the inside of our brains sound like. Stream of consciousness exploring the beauty and the chaos.”
Indigo De Souza’s performance with the full band made up of Maddie Shuler, Landon George, and Lila Richardson, did not include any songs from their new EP, yet previewed many unreleased songs which felt more like classic Indigo De Souza. This included songs about a heartbreak, and her dog, which has us eagerly awaiting a new release.
One of the most compelling things about Indigo De Souza is her honesty. They spoke candidly on stage about how she’s recently developed anxiety about performing live shows. Fans cheered in support and gave her the extra love she needed to get through the show, hopefully with minimal anxiety. Through everything, her energy shined through and infected the audience as we all jumped up and down and danced with her and the band.
Along with the new songs, Indigo played fan favorites including “You Can Be Mean” and “Late Night Crawler.” Indigo joined the ranks of artists phasing out the encore, leaving the stage for good after the heartbreaking ballad “Younger and Dumber.”
